The Sunset Moth (Urania riphaeus) is marked with brilliant green, blue, and red on a black background, with multiple different colors and tri-spiked tail. This large beautiful moth is found only on the island of Madagascar off the southeast coast of Africa. Sunset moths, unlike most other moths, are active during the day.
The Sunset Moth is one of the most colorful moths in the world, with the hind wings' colors changing as you shift your angle of view. The Sunset Moth's pigmented wing scales have submicroscopic structures that reflect different wavelengths of the light spectrum. |
