The visually stunning green and black Malachite butterfly (Siproeta stelenes) is a member of the Nymphalidae, or brushfoot family of butterfly, the largest family of butterflies. At least half the brushfoots feed on fruit, and the ones that do have more muscular bodies and fly much more rapidly than those that don't.
Around the world people are inspired by the marvelous metamorphosis of the humble earthbound caterpillar into the graceful and delicate butterfly, seeing in this seemingly magical transformation the possibility that the body can take a new angelic form in an afterlife. |
