Common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) are one of the most boldly colored and gregarious cetacean species. They are very often found swimming in vast shoals of hundreds and sometimes even thousands of animals.
Common dolphins frequently delight mariners by riding the pressure wave at the bow of a fast moving vessel, a behavior known as bowriding. Amazingly, common dolphins have on occassion been seen surfing the pressure waves created by cruising gray, humpback, fin, and blue whales-a pasttime they have probably been enjoying in the world's oceans for millenia. |
