All swallowtail species, of which there are 500, belong to the family Papilionidae. The most noticeable feature of Swallowtails is the spikey projection that extends from the rear of each hind wing. These projections look like an insect's head and serve to confuse predators.
Among nature lovers Swallowtails rank as one of the best known butterflies. They are usually large with showy colors and are commonly found in North America, Europe, North Africa, and Asia. Swallowtails fare equally well in lowland, hilly, and mountainous regions. In Nepal, they can be found at elevations of 15,000 feet! |
