This beautiful tropical butterfly has no common name, thus it is known by its scientific name Agrias aedon narcissus. It is found in rainforests from Mexico to the northern Amazon basin. In 1886, a lepidopterist (butterfly scientist) named Standinger gave Agrias aedon narcissus its Latin scientific designation.
The butterflies of the genus Agrias are regarded as priceless gems of the insect world. Despite its widespread distribution, Agrias aedon narcissus is thought to be a rare species. Like many tropical butterflies, A. narcissus is threatened by the ongoing destruction of tropical rainforests. |
